Student Project by Ginevra D’Agustino

4.S52 Immersive Media & Virtual Production, Spring 2021

In this workshop, students develop independent projects in immersive media as it relates to architectural design and spatial storytelling. We will consider technologies of immersion including VR/AR, web-based experiences, sound installations, and virtual production workflows. Throughout the semester we will explore the field of immersive media through readings, precedent artwork, and hands-on experience with production tools. We will specifically focus on the production pipelines that use real time simulations and game engines. Students are encouraged to work on the aspects of their studio projects and thesis. The workshop will provide a studio environment for the students to collaborate and provide feedback to each other. Limited to 10 students.

Learning Objectives/Pedagogy
The class is organized around independent student projects that explore the use of immersive media and virtual production workflows. We will critically engage with the written material on the topics of VR/AR/ XR and virtual production. We will critique, analyze, and deconstruct precedent artwork, and
evaluate their relevance to design practices. Students are expected to develop projects, engage in weekly desk crits, report on their progress, and present their final project at the end of the semester.
• Students will gain a theoretical background in the emerging fields of immersive media, film making, and architecture.
• Have a practical knowledge on virtual production tools, digital simulations, and game engines.
• Ability to represent their work in variety of media including but not limited to VR/AR, and web-based narratives.
• Learn to translate architectural designs into interactive scenes and experiences.
